What to do when you disagree with the doctor?

Well, I've said before how unhappy I am with the healthcare where I am. I've settled on a practice right now, which I do not like, but am waiting to get into another one. Well, Kayleigh had that UTI the other week, and this doctor keeps on me about getting some procedure done to her. Where they catherderize her and inject something into her bladder to see if her urine is flowing backwards into her kidneys. Its just VERY odd that he keeps bugging me about this. He keeps saying, "Just in case if she gets recurring uti's, we'll know if its a ohysiocal problem or not." I think this is very severe and invasive, since shes only had uti EVER. I keep telling him no, and everything I see him, he keeps pusing it on me. I told him the other day that he indicated her uti was from a bacteria that came from stool. Not from her urine backing up into her kidneys. He says "Yes, but if it happens again, you may begin to wonder why is she getting them." I said "If it was from stool, its because she had a runny diaper or something and got a uti. Of at that time we can't figure it out, then we'll do all this." He asked like he didn't hear me, wrote me a script to get the procedure done and tells me hes faxing the other procedure paper to Childrens hospital and "you'll take her there tomorrow." I was like Needless to say, we're not going and I'll send hubby to the doctors next time! Maybe he'll listen to a man!

What would you do in this situation? I just don't see the push, since shes only had uti. AND I've enever heard of having this procedure done, even with adults.

Julie,
Is there any way you can take her to see someone else and get a second opinion? Personally, I don't care for Doc's that that don't listen to a "mother's intuition,"....because most often, Mom is right!!
That's my 2

I would personally ignore. HIm and maybe try to get a second opinion. I do not understand why he wants this procedure done "just in case she has more UTI's" esp. when you are pretty sure you know what is causing them. And I think it is crazy that he won't take no for an answer about it and scheduled the procedure anyways.

I would ignore him and try t find a new doctor. It sounds to me like he is doing it to make more money. Because if you have this procedure done then you have to go back to him for the test results resulting in him making more money. I don't know I would go with intuition and look for a new dr asap.

I could understand wanting this procedure done if she had several UTI's but if this is the first documented one I think he is jumping to conclusions. Are you taking her to a peds doctor or is this a family practice? I would find a pediatrician to take the kids too!

I totally agree with your assessment! If I were in your situation, and I was forced to see this doctor I would have to say something along the lines of, "I appreciate your concern and if this becomes a recurring problem, I'll consider it. But I'm her mother and I will decide when that time is. Thank you."

Is this a practice with other doctors? I had a real problem with a doctor at a practice I was forced to go to for insurance reasons and I told the receptionist I would not see him any longer. When she asked why, I told her. And I never had to see him again. I also had a situation where an ENT insisted that Kailyn have tubes put in her ears when she had never had an ear infection in her life - since they would be taking out the tonsils anyway. I ended up in a yelling match with him and he told me I was making a huge mistake. I told him I appreciated his concern, but I was the Mommy.

Go with your gut! s

Thanks for your input ladies! This is a pediatric office and there are 2 other docs there. One doesn't accept my insurance and I've seen the other and shes a complete dope! I too am going there for insurance reasons, but as soon as it changes, we're out of there!

I don't blame you one bit for getting out of there as soon as you can. He sounds like a real jerk. My girls' pediatrician is the most wonderful man! He always takes the time to listen to me, and takes my opinions to account. Where in Ohio are you located? We're in Southeastern Ohio.

Hi Joy,

I'm in Southwest Ohio. Northeast of Cincinnati - in Loveland. I think you're 2 1/2 hrs. from me. You're in Zanesville, right?
